Native to Southern California, local artist, Anya Peterson, has taken her exposure to the west coast landscapes and seascapes and translated them into brightly colored paintings and realistic drawings which reflect her love of nature.
As a child, Anya spent plenty of time near or on the ocean, whether it was fishing with her father and grandfather or going to the beach with her mother and step-father. She was taught to respect the power and beauty of the ocean and as an adult, she turned to art to express her love of the sea.
Anya was introduced to art supplies by her mom, who traded Halloween candy for art supplies and encouraged her to express her creative side through art and not limit herself. She started with finger paints as a kid and ended up using graphite for most of her projects as she got older. Drawing was her creative outlet of choice, up until recently.
Painting entered the scene after a 10 year hiatus. After doing a very special project and getting some great feedback and advice, Anya started painting in 2011 and applied to show her work at First Friday Las Vegas, which was her first show. It opened several doors into the Las Vegas art scene. RAW, Natural Born Artists invited her to do a show and she ended up meeting some fantastic artists who invited her into their circle to start painting live with them. She’s been painting live ever since and those people she met turned out to be some of her best friends. She has been painting ever since and has shown her work at The Arts Factory, the Cosmopolitan, The Palazzo, RAW Natural Born Artists, and more, and currently has work on display at The Coffee House in Henderson and in the fine art gallery in Henderson City Hall.
One thing that has been important throughout Anya’s life has been helping others and though art, she has been able to do so. Some charities and benefits she has been proud to contribute to either by painting live or donating a piece are masks for “Unmasking the Mind”, for Innovations International Charter School, The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, The Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada, Cirque Couture, and Celebrate Las Vegas Artists for Autism, and the Wyland Foundation just to name a few. As an artist, she believes that she really can make a difference and she hopes to continue to do so for years to come.
